We’re now at the end of week 3 of the winter lettuce trial.
As discussed in the earlier posts, we’re demonstrating how simple a system can be used for hydroponics growing. There are of course lots of things that can be improved upon and hence get better results.
In the background you' can see a tin foil ‘wall’ that we’ve placed around the tray. This is to reflect the light around the grow area so that the plants grow more evenly and don’t grow so much towards the light.
Another simple improvement is to ensure that no light reaches the nutrient water. If you allow light to reach the nutrient rich water then more often than not Algae will grow. In this set-up we are changing the water weekly to keep this under control but a piece of card of similar with holes for the pots cut into it would do just fine.
