Growing Avocado at home with Hydroponics

It’s easier than you’d think but takes patience!

Start by germinating the pit. There’s lots of bad advice online like sticking pits with toothpicks and suspending it in a glass of water. I’ve found that placing the pit on a 1ltr milk bottle full of water is good enough. So long as the bottom of the pit is in constant contact with water it’ll grow. But be patient, it takes many weeks. The pit will start to split open before a root will start to grow.

Once the first few leaves grow you can transfer to an opaque bucket with nutrient solution (best to be black so no light gets in). We use hydrofeed complete for all our Hydroponics.

This one was transfered in September ‘23.

And it’s now quite a lot bigger. The new set of leaves have appeared in the last month now that the days are getting longer.

I’ll need to create some better support for them soon as they’re getting a bit too top heavy!

This one has a slightly different habit and is growing huge leaves. They’re also tasty as we’ve had a slug nibble of one of the leaves!

They need to be kept warm indoors and get plenty of light. They’ll slow their growth over winter when there’s not enough daylight (could be solved with growlights). During the summer they’ll grow quickly.

Happy Growing
